Zhuji Fm

Period:
Jurassic

Age Interval:
Middle Jurassic, (TJ68)

Province:
Henan

Type Locality and Naming

It was named by the Geological College of Beijing in 1959-1961. The naming section is located in the Zhuji area of Shangcheng County, Henan Province, with its reference section being situated in the area extending from the Xiahewan Reservoir to the vicinity of the Wumiao Temple of Gushi County, Henan Province.

Synonym: (朱集组)

Lithology and Thickness

Lower part is composed of purple conglomerates. Middle part is grey and yellow-brown lithic arkosic sandstones. Upper part consists of purple sandstones and siltstones, intercalated with conglomerates and sandy conglomerates. The total thickness of the strata is 2200 m.

Lithology Pattern:
Coarse-grained sandstone

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Its basal part is in an unconformable contact with the underlying Lower Carboniferous Huayuanqiang Fm

Upper contact

Regionally, the schematic strat column indicates the next younger unit as Duanji Fm

Regional extent

It is distributed in the area extending from the Wenshu Temple of Guangshan County to the Zhuji Market of Shangcheng County in eastern Qinling Mts, entering the territory of Anhui Province easterly. The best development of the formation is found to occur at the Wumiao Temple of Gushi County. In the Saliping area the thickness of the formation is reduced to be 1393 m, yet the thickness of the basal conglomerate is increasing up to 200 m.

No fossil has been found from the formation so far.

Age

Its age has been determined mainly on the basis of regional stratigraphic correlation, its relations to both the underlying and overlying strata, and the time of intrusion of the early Yanshanian Granite (isotope age of 142 Ma), and is inferred to be assigned to the Middle Jurassic Epoch. Schematic strat column in the previous "red Chinese Lexicon" had implied that the Zhuji Fm spanned late-Middle Jurassic.
